Hormonal Balance
When hormones are out of balance – whether there’s elevated cortisol levels from chronic stress, decreased estrogens due to the aging process, or decreased thyroxine from a hypofunctioning thyroid gland – it can throw the entire body off and create a snowball effect. One complication can lead to another, leading to multifactoral conditions and a host of complaints. Hormones play a significant role in skin health. A decrease in estrogen can cause the skin to become dry. When androgens, or male hormones, are in excess, they can create acne. The testosterone byproduct dihydrotestosterone (DHT) thickens skin and toughens its underlying tissues, reducing its soft, glowing appearance. High DHT levels trap oils in your glands and is the leading cause of acne and the scars acne leaves behind in its path. Maintaining hormonal balance is an important factor in achieving and maintaining optimal health as well as skin vigor.
