Treatment for Burn Scars

Significantly restores mobility, skin elasticity and skin texture

The History

Historically, burn scars have been one of the most difficult scars to treat. Many months after recovery, patients usually suffer from chronic pain, disfigurement, and limited motion of various parts of their bodies. As burn scars mature, another problems develop. Fibrosis (hardening and thickening) and tightening of the skin further restrict mobility of many areas including the mouth, jaw, neck, hands, fingers, arms, and legs.

Realizing the physical and psychological trauma caused by severe burns, Horst Liebl, the Dermaroller® inventor, worked with plastic surgeons in Germany and Ukraine to improve some of the damaging effects caused by burns using medical micro-needling.

Burn scar challenges

Burn scars often include a combination of all forms of scars including: hypo, hypertrophic and keloid scars along with hyperpigmentation. Burn scars usually thicken and harden as they mature and age. Until recently the options available for burn scar therapy to plastic and burn surgeons have been very limited.

The solution

To treat these extraordinary burn after-effects, the research team developed the new Dermaroller® model MC925 – specifically for burn scar treatment.

This model incorporates several technological advancements. One was identifying an ideal type of steel alloy with specific characteristics to induce healing. They also engineered a harder, stress resistant, yet flexible steel tip to penetrate, but not traumatize the treatment area.

Clinical studies and hundreds of patients report Dermaroller® model MC925 dramatically:

  • Improves burn scars
  • Decreases pain
  • Reduces disfigurement
  • Increases mobility
  • Enhances skin elasticity
  • Improves the physical and psychological condition of the patients

What you must know about treating burn scars

  1. Burn scars are subject to infections because normal defense mechanisms are altered. Extensive burn scars must be treated in a very clean environment, usually in “burn centers” and operating rooms.

  2. Topical numbing creams, irrespective of strength, cannot significantly penetrate the thick scar tissue without assistance. In the event that the burn scars are extensive or with children with burn scars, medical micro-needling must be performed under general anesthesia, and in some cases under regional anesthesia. In most adult cases, if adequately prepared, all that is needed is good topical anesthesia. You must consult with your plastic or burn surgeon.

  3. Burn scars are slow to respond. They change and transform slowly. Frequently during the medical procedure, multiple types of Medical Dermaroller® devices will be used. Both you and the medical professional must patiently observe the clinical response. It can take up to six (6) months to one (1) year to see the final results from a single treatment.
Please remember that the better your health, hormonal and nutritional status, the better your results from any therapeutic procedures.

Please note, all of these Medical Dermaroller® procedures were completed under anesthesia.

facial burn before Dermaroller treatment facial burn after Dermaroller treatment
Before: A typical case of chronic redness after a third-degree burn. This was caused by heat damage affecting the blood vessels. After: Medical micro-needling stimulates the growth of new blood vessels. The image above shows the results seven (7) months after one (1) medical micro-needling procedure.

Before: A severe calf burn scar.
Note the marbled hyperpigmentation.
After: The image above shows the result eight (8)
months after one (1) treatment .

Before: Severe burn scars on entire lower face. Destroyed skin tissue and underlying muscles prevent the patient from opening the mouth enough to eat or speak.

After: Reduced scar tissue, regenerated facial muscles and skin tissue is enough to regain nearly full facial movement. Skin texture and elasticity increased to be able to comfortably speak and eat. The overall facial appearance is fuller 6 weeks after one treatment with Dermaroller® MS925.
