Who is Qualified to Perform Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)?

As the leading US distributor of Dermaroller® medical micro-needling devices, Cynergy® is frequently consulted by state medical and allied health care professional regulatory boards regarding CIT standards.

CIT is a medical/surgical procedure. A medical micro-needling device has micro-needles ranging in lengths from 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm. And, although the procedure and the medical device appear simple, please consider the following prior to allowing anyone to perform CIT on you. Complications can occur as with any other medical/surgical procedure. The medical professional has to be competent and able to deal with such events should they occur. Medical judgment, prudence and discretion have to be exercised. The public is frequently misled and is unaware of these facts. Use of a Dermaroller® Home Roller, which has needles that are 0.2 mm long, is not considered a medical procedure and can safely be used at home.

CIT requires preparation. The patient needs to be adequately medically assessed prior to CIT. Why? Because, prior to considering a CIT procedure, it needs to be determined if a patient is an adequate candidate for CIT and if there are any contraindications to performing the procedure. An examination is required in order to determine and diagnose if there are any other factors contributing to the patient's skin condition. It requires a deep foundation in anatomy, neuroanatomy, immunology, physiology, pharmacology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nutrition and dermatology.  For this reason, Medical Dermaroller® devices are provided only to trained medical professionals. Medical Dermaroller® devices will not be sold directly to the public or to unqualified individuals according to state imposed licensing limitations unlike other micro-needling companies or resellers. Dermaroller® complies with state and federal laws that regulate the practice of medicine.

Due to their training and experience, the medical professionals that are allowed to perform CIT by their respective regulatory boards are licensed physicians such as an M.D, D.O. or N.D. A duly licensed R.N and physician assistant (PA) can perform CIT if under the direct supervision of a licensed physician. Some states allow R.N's and PA's to perform CIT without medical supervision.

Although regulations are currently being reviewed in some states, in states such as California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, Utah, Texas, New York and Oregon, to name a few, estheticians are not allowed to perform CIT. Acupuncturists may or may not be able to perform CIT depending on the scope of practice limitations in their respective states.

Should you have any questions regarding the scope of practice limitations of any licensed medical professional, RN, PA, esthetician, acupuncturist or any other licensed profession please contact their respective state boards of medical quality assurance or licensing boards.  For your convenience listed below are some of the available regulatory agencies' web sites.
